Easy Avatar Creation Guide

Hi This is a quick and dirty guide to making your own avatar.

First get a picture
  1. The first thing you will need is a picture of something you would like to use as an avatar.
  2. You can get them online, take screenshots, check out the or even request a screenshot from one of our members.
  3. If its online right click on the picture and choose Save Picture As... then choose or take note of where it is being saved
Next copy the part of the picture you want for your avatar
  1. Once you have the picture on your computer open it in MS paint.
  2. Locate the selection tool in the top left hand of the screen
  3. Click and drag a box around the part of the picture that you want for an avatar.
  4. While selecting write down the dimensions of your selection
    I recommend that the dimensions be equal to maximize the space available for your avatar
  5. Next choose Edit--> Copy or Ctrl+C
    Warning, this is a spoiler!
  6. Warning, this is a spoiler!
Next make the copy into an picture
  1. Make a new bitmap File-->New or Ctrl+N
  2. This may prompt you to save changes. You don't need to so choose Don't Save
  3. Paste your selection into the new window
  4. The dimensions of your paint area may be larger than your picture at this time. Meaning there is white around your picture

    If so you will need to resize it. (Put your cursor on the bottom corner and click and drag it until the white area is gone. Hold down Alt for more precision when resizing) You can see the dimensions in the bottom right corner as you resize as well. Make them the same as your copied selection

    You can also choose Image--> Attributes (Ctrl+E) and type in the dimensions which may be easier.
Resize the picture to an appropriate size
  1. OK you need to know how much to shrink (or grow) the picture. Open up calculator enter your desired dimension then divide by the larger of your dimensions.
    (Example my picture is 365 x 365 and I want it to be 100. So, I enter 100/365 and get about .27 or 27%. It doesn't have to be exact I could even go with 30%
  2. Next choose Image --> Resize/skew... or Ctrl+W
  3. Enter the percentage into resize boxes. It must be the same in each box or your picture will skew instead of just resize.
  4. Click OK and save your new avatar (remember where you saved it)
Warning, this is a spoiler!

Change your avatar to your new created one.
  1. Log into projectego.net and click on
  2. On the right, click on Edit Avatar
  3. Near the bottom of the page, in the Custom Avatar area, choose Browse and locate your avatar, select it and choose open.
  4. Now choose save changes and you're done.

I think it could be simplified but its always better to learn the more difficult ways first as you will always find easier ways afterwards so wouldnt say anything needed to be cut out.

Re: Easy Avatar Creation Guide

No probs really, I just get utterly confused with technical things coz that's what husbands are for....(I'm more of a "ooh look honey, American Idol is on!" than a computer worky outy stuff type person)

From what I could gather it's a detailed and comprehensive guide - don't be discouraged at all
