This is an interesting article that talks about the advances Vista brings to gaming. After reading this I aseriously hoping that "when" Fable 2 comes to the PC that it is Vista only

Some good points in there, the main ones being DirectX 10 and above, Crysis and Windows Live. Unsure if it should be Vista ONLY as some people still wont have Vista or want Vista.

Considering it could be 2009 by the time Fable 2 is released to the PC I think there will be plenty of people on Vista. Designing the game so that it could be played on the older and less powerful Windows XP is like making Fable 2 playable on the xbox as well as the 360. I think it would dumb down the game. Window XP came out in 2001 even if Fable 2 is made ready for the PC next year that would be designing on 7 year old technology.
The three reasons that Vista let down games are all related to other vendor not getting their act together in time and as we all know they had a lot of time.

Hardware compatibility By the time it's released the driver will be ready
Backward compatibility This is even more reason to make it based on Vista
Lack of DirectX10 Games Again a good reason to make it for Vista only

There is a pretty good chance that it will be made for only Vista

Im just not convinced by Vista yet until they fix the issues it has and i sure as hell wont be paying £400+ for it and then finding out some of my favourite XP games dont work on it.

... but if other games still continue to be made for XP, regardless of whether you think they should get with it and make their games for Vista, if they don't then you're left with a huge amount of games that you can't play...
... and the a lack of backwards compatability is hardly "even more reason" to make it Vista only, as it is a huge deterrant for people to even pick up Vista in the first place... if your market doesn't want to use Vista, then it makes no difference if the game will play better if no one will find out cause they wont play it...
I just think that there are a lot of variables still and think it would be best if Fable were made for XP and for Vista... if one is better than the other, so be it...

If it were made for XP it could not take advantage of DirectX 10 therefor the game would be a lower quality.

I'm not talking about weather other games should work with Vista Just Fable 2. If it is designed for XP there could be backward compatibility issues with Vista. If they design it for Vista there won't be backward compatibility issues!

Do you think that any games should be designed for Vista? Because they wouldn't be able to be played on XP.

I want the best games possible and I think that the next gen in windows gaming requires Vista.

I want Fable 2 for the PC to be the best game possible and not saddled with last generation technology.

Guys, Vista sucks. I hope to God that fable 2 PC isnt just for vista. Vista for one, is a complete copy of Mac, and second, half the time when you try to upgrade your computer to vista, theres a blue screen which ****s it up (sorry for the language).

yeah... I understand that... I never said that Fable 2 shouldn't be made for vista, I merely said that it could be better from a marketing perspective to also make it for xp as well...

and to disregard whether other games will work on vista is to disregard the entire market...
if you have a system on which there are few games currently made for it, and lack of backwards compatability, you end up with a potential uphill battle to get people to purchase that system...
if you then have a large proportion of your market opting out of owning that system in favour of the old one, you do yourself a disservice by losing that share of the market if you ignore that and choose not to give people options...
obviously the game would likely be far superior on vista... that's why I think it should be made for vista, but until certain kinks are worked out, it should really be made for both, in my opinion

Have you used Vista? I am right now (work laptop)and it doesn't suck far from it. It ROCKS!

Hex: I totally agree that making games for XP is important it will be 2-4 years until most people are on Vista. I just want Fable 2 to take advantage of DirectX10

Got to remember how long Fable 2 has been in production and that most the GFX engine and such has already been programmed and they are mainly working on story areas and bugs now so if it isnt designed for DirectX 10 now it never will be.

That's not really a long list. It is also 2 months old.
If anyone asks me if they should upgrade their computer to Vista I say no. Wait until you're ready to get a new PC and then make sure that it is beefy enough to handle Vista Home Premium or Ultimate.

I wont be getting a new rig but upgrading my own instead as mines quite customised and i dont want to start afresh but will get a new GFX Card and bigger processor when need be. I want myself a 512Mb GFX card when i can find a good one so i cant simply 'wait' until i get a new machine so i will have to pay the full price for Vista if or when i want it.

That's a good point. I want to go to 64 bit Vista but my PVR is only compatible with the 32 bit.
