Borderlands Game Review (by me)

BORDERLANDS REVIEW
by cheezmcnasty

Systems: XBOX 360, PlayStation 3, PC

Borderlands is a game that is the child of a Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Diablo, and Mad Max foursome. It runs much like an arcade-style shooter first, with RPG elements that are emphasized secondly. If you like guns, the game has 3.8 million exactly and 4 player co-op in couch, online, and system link.

Gameplay: 9/10
Borderlands is incredibly gore. The guns the game produces can, in some cases, do previously unimaginable things to the human body. However, the game has such a strong arcade play presence that you will never be shocked unless you really don't dig violent games. The four playable characters (who are unfortunately extremely uncustomizable) all play extremely well. They all have unique skills, for themselves as well as for the party. All of the guns are organized so that you find certain level guns at certain levels, and depending on how rare it is, it could be on par with a weapon normally found 10 levels above. Upon reaching the level cap of 50 the game unlocks all of the guns that could never conceivably exist on any reasonable level you might reach, and so the fun begins. Only minor quirks are the small physics glitches and what-not, but nothing too serious.

Story: 5/10
This game emphasizes playability, and as such did not give the game a story. Instead you get more of a guideline. "There is vault on this planet full of alien weapons, unimaginable riches, and a 12 foot pure gold statue of Barack Obama". You are just one of the many wanderers on this wasteland of a planet, most of humanity pulled out as the planet proved to be a desolate. The concept is nice, but the story just throws handfuls of quests at you like an MMO and eventually one pops up that says "go to vault" .

Graphics: 8/10
The graphics here are incredibly cool, they are cel-shaded and so look similar to games like Jet Set Radio Future, Killer 7, and Naruto/DragonBall Z games. Minor glitches occur such as rooms looking dark and empty, then when you walk in and the dark inside was a 2D plane...and the room is suddenly lit.

OVERALL SCORE: 8.5/10

a lot of the weapons have small variations in magazine size, elemental damage modifiers, damage, etc.. but overall there is plenty of diversity. There are several different companies that can make the gun, and each does it differently. So even if you pick up a gun that has the same stats as another companies, the reload time, damage, elemental modifiers, magazine size, and accuracy could be totally different.

Saying there are 3.8 million from a gameplay perspective would seem like an overestimation unless you've hit the level cap of 50, as all of the guns that are too crazy and exotic to be awarded to a player of any reasonable level begin to show up around then.

EDIT: I stumbled across this... it pretty well describes just how in depth and different the guns are (apart from claiming 1 million guns when there are really nearly 4)

I'm starting to get p**sed off with these cartoon graphics. It's laziness.

But it does look fun. And games are always better in coop
