Community Spotlight v. 4: Albion Knight

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No… In fact, that’s not even close… those were terrible guesses… I'll give you a hint: It’s Wednesday again! And that means it’s time for this week’s projectego.net Community Spotlight!

This time I quietly, because he’s old and startles easily, cornered one of our very own poor and now penniless Supporters. Albion Knight, or AK as he’s known among the forums is an oldie, but a goodie, and though he’s been with us for a relatively short time, has made quite the contribution around here. So, I thought, what better way to repay him than to spend an evening harassing him and putting him to the question…

Let’s see what transpired, shall we?

Hexadecimal: Well, first things first, what exactly brought you to our less than humble community?

AK: I was looking for information on Fable 2 release date etc. I hung out in that part of the forum to start with.

Hexadecimal: Well, you certainly didn't stay in that neck of the woods for long... in a mere 3 months you've sky rocketed into our top ten posters... so what was it that made you want to get so involved with us, and move beyond just looking for info?

AK: Yea I was a crazy poster. I like the interaction. It's fun trying to come up with new ideas and new ways to look at things. It's a great creative outlet. Also it makes playing Fable that much more fun. I bought TLC for PC after I started posting and I was fun trying different things at posting it, like when I beat the game without leveling up.

Hexadecimal: So, your interest in Fable brought you to our forums, and the forums renewed your interest in Fable? nice...

Well, as you know, largely because I keep reminding you I’m sure, you are one of the community’s oldest members, and certainly the oldest active member… so, what is it like being in a community of people much younger than yourself? In what ways, from your perspective, is the gamer culture different or the same from, say, a decade ago?

AK: Or two decades One way is that there are so many more good games. When I was younger you could pretty much play every game there was. It wasn't long before that changed. The games are also so much more in depth now. The 3D aspect of gaming made a big difference as well.
For the most part I don't think about it. There is on occasion times where I hold off saying something that I could probably get away with if I was closer in age to the rest of the forum but would sound weird coming from someone older.

Hexadecimal: Would you have any examples?

AK: Being older any sexual references would instantly turn me into creepy old guy. Like if I remark on your MSN display . You I think can handle it but with kids of all ages reading the post. It could get ugly fast…. There was that time that Markie was accused of flirting with me. that was borderline as well.

Hexadecimal: hahaha I remember that one

So, beyond being the resident dirty old man on our forums, what else do you do with your spare time? Any particularly disturbing hobbies?

AK: LOL too funny
I'm pretty techy I've been studying for a Windows 2003 Server certification. I like reading and spending time with family watching BritComs. Pretty standard stuff really. I like math that's a disturbing hobby for sure.

Hexadecimal: The horror… the horror…

Well…. Since you mention your family, what exactly do they think of our festive group eating up almost all of your time? … that and our little arcade… I think you may have an addiction there… are they plotting our doom at this very moment? Should we be afraid? So very afraid?

AK: LOL I haven't been to the arcade since that one night where I went and got the High score on 30+ games most of which I only played once. I am addicted to the forum a bit. I slip in posts in between a lot of other things. They're ok with it. My daughter likes Devalion's and Angle's sigs. She so cute when she says "We like the mooooon" and "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this!"

Hexadecimal: Well, it's nice to see you're bringing your daughter up in the good spirit of gaming.

AK: Yeah there are times when she's like "Can we pleeeeease play Fable?". She can't wait for Fable 2 either.

Hexadecimal: So, what are you looking forward to most with Fable 2? And how does that compare to what your daughter is looking forward to?

AK: I’m most looking forward to the depth of game play. Some of the things I'm looking forward to I'm not sure will come to be as I expect them like the idea of instant/ constant save rather than have save points where you can go back and choose a different answer or make a different decision. In other words, I’m hoping for real consequences to your actions. I hope that you can't swing from fully good to fully evil in a day and back again. My daughter is looking forward to playing as a girl and hopefully playing together.

Hexadecimal: Yeah… to be honest I’m hoping for all those too…

What for you has been the single most rewarding experience you've gained from joining this community?

AK: Single most rewarding experience WOW! You mean aside from this awesome interview with you?
First thing that comes to mind is the creative writing and artwork specifically working on the logo. I haven't given my creative side much of an outlet other than creative problem solving so that has been a lot of fun. I'm much more of a geeky math/computer type.

Hexadecimal: You're quite the suck up, AK... and I've always liked that about you...

Well… for my last question, I’ll just ask whether you have anything else you’d like to share with the community… your secret identity? A sexual attraction to fire? You can tell us…

AK: Nothing that exciting I'm afraid. I once walked on fire though. It was quite strange. It's amazing what the power of the mind can do.
Thanks I've gotta run but I'll try to get on tonight if you need anything else from me.

Hexadecimal: … and I guess that’s another one of those comments that can be taken the wrong way when you’re a dirty old man…

And there you have it! Albion Knight: gamer, father, dirty old man… A man of many faces, each more disturbing than the last…

I must thank Albion Knight for sharing his time with me, and all of you as well for taking an interest in yet another of our fun-tastic members. Tune in next week, when the madness takes hold in the next Community Spotlight.

Cold, FableFreak, cold. Albion Knight seems like a cool guy. I would like to play Fable with him, if there was ever a Projectego meetup.

He knows I'm joking.

I was just thinking the other day "Albion Knight seems like the kind of guy I could sit next to at a Pub and drinks a ton of lager with."
