Design Your Own Video Game Contest!

I know that there is already a thread on something like this already from me, but I have permission from Dark Drakan, and it is both a contest and a gaming topic, so...

I might as well begin.

The purpose of this thread is to encourage members to get creative. Create a 500-5,000 word document about your dream game. Speak as if you were writing one for a video game company such as Bioware or Lionhead, or if you are talking to a to-be video game designer. If you feel uncomfortable posting details, that is fine with me, but don't make a scantily clad document.

Details and a format lie below.

Make the document as detailed as possible, but not as huge as a normal document. PLEASE.

Be sure to specify the genre, title, purpose, age audience, a summary of the gameplay, physics, and plot, technological purpose, and even hype to some extent.

You are free to compare it to any other game if you wish to be explicitly understood. A three-point perspective (Timmy, Johnny, Spike, explained in the wiki following) is also recommended.

Make the intricacies of the game simple and fun. I can say from experience that, say, hacking all that can be hacked in such games as Bioshock is fun. It makes you feel like you have ultimate power over Rapture's security. As a matter of fact, it pays off. Anyone who has seen a splicer been shot by a turret or caught by a security camera will most likely think it priceless.

Now I will speak about medieval/fantasy RPGS. Let us say that you are the captain of some army or control a few guards. Is it not interesting to send a couple of guards after a villager or go to war with other nations? But I am beginning to go off track...

Before you create a design document, think about these:

What can the game character do? Can he or she fly, swim, and teleport?

How many different enemies will the hero fight?

What kind(s) of weapons are available?

How does the player get rejuvenated?

Can more than one player play at once? If so, what are the ramifications of this?

Will the game's perspective be a side view, top view, or first-person and full 3-D view?

What kind of sound track? Rock, rap, techno?

What is the personality of the main character?

What kinds of abilities does the hero receive?

What is the purpose in the game?

How does it appeal to different players?

If you can, how can you interact with the environment-is it destructible? Is it usable?

What type of story do you wish to make? Do you want it to be an epic tale of saving the world, fulfilling your own wishes, or crushing the planet under your heels?

(Courtesy of Click Here

Those questions should make you think about others, about the characters, rules, laws, and goals of your universe. You have all the power in making it as detailed as possible. The more detailed it is, the better a game is likely to be. Record all of these in the way a movie script is recorded. Correct any mistakes and make all the elements fit perfectly together. It is also recommended that a storyboard is drawn somewhere.

Do all the abilities, skills, and interactions fit in and make sense? This is a key part of designing game mechanics.

The purpose of this document is to have a game image vivid in your mind, making it simpler to create a more realistic world. This draws the players into the game.

Idea Sources

Other games: Don't copy another game, of course, but improving and taking a new perspective within the game is fine.

Movies and videos: Watch as many sci-fi movies as possible and see if you can come up with a game based on some of their ideas and content. Of course, you need to get permission from the filmmaker if you use any characters or story lines from those movies.

Real-life games: You can take a game such as hockey and make a computer version of it, or make a futuristic version of it.

Dreams and nightmares: This technique is a gold mine; in your mind, you can try anything out. Go to sleep thinking about games, demons, monsters, or whatever, and hopefully, you will have a killer dream that gives you an idea for a game.

(Most of the above is copied, directly or indirectly, from the aforementioned link, picking important points.)

Again, think about these:

Creativity-Be creative-this helps greatly with the document.
Genre-Create one in a genre you like.

A unique aspect-e.g. (Plasmids in Bioshock, a first-person shooter.)

Difficulty-Think about the type of game and the diffculty that fits it.

Fairness-Make it fair (For example, don't make it like the predjudiced police in GTA: San Andreas.)

Avoid frustration-Try to avoid things that are frustrating to the average gamer.

Here are several links where you can find what I am talking about:

Howstuffworks "How 3DO Creates Video Games"

Now, as for the rules of the contest itself:

1. Be creative or you have a very small chance of winning. A unique aspect is also recommended.

2. Make it organized, or you will be disregarded.

3. Follow the appropriate format (above).

4. Create a 500-5,000 page document (for those who didn't see it before).

5. Make it well described and descriptive, but don't make it so descriptive that people can dream the whole thing up easily in their head.

Here is the application form:

Username:
Will you uphold the rules? [Yes/No]
The Name of the Game you want if you win: (This makes the process faster.)

The contest will be sponsored by me, and the reward will be...any video game that you want, unless it is not too ridiculous to attempt to find (very old games or games that didn't even come out yet).

That is pretty much it. Thanks everyone.

Re: Design Your Own Video Game Contest!

Don't get too excited though-you most likely will not receive the game immediately, and if I cannot find what you want, you will probably have to choose another.

Re: Design Your Own Video Game Contest!

What would be the point of making a game based upon someone else's ideas?

1. I deem that deceitful and ridiculous. (Or at least the mendacious type.)

2. It is theoretically and logically impossible and improbable to create a game unerringly based on someone else's ideas.

3. It is impossible to properly combine everyone's ideas in one game.

4. It will not estrange anybody in any way, because one game made from someone's idea is not likely to be have more in eminence than the original idea.

Yes, I feel extreme to a degree about this issue, but it's just not right when some un-creative individual has the audacity to attempt theft of someone else's mentally copyrighted ideas and take gratuitous acclaim, as well as prestige for it.

In other words, I won't try to take your game idea.

Re: Design Your Own Video Game Contest!

lol I didn't mean to push you over your 'ledge' I created the Doc its really nice ideas I may actually make the second one but hey only time would tell lol. The programing for dummys seems really remarkable I didn't know how reliable that series was but I've still got to learn a bunch before I'm ready to start programing I'll be looking for some books. Oh and about that combining of ideas you can simply ask if someone wants to be a char in your game they make there char according to your specifications and you compile all of them maybe ask them how a level or two should be and wala! You can easily throw together a nice game based off a forum with forum members as chars the plot could be about hackers or spammers got into the forums and your trying to defend it anything thats fun will be a hit (a funny story doesn't hurt).

Re: Design Your Own Video Game Contest!

I don't really take offense. Just telling you.

Getting back on topic, you are free to post it at your own convenient schedule.

Edit: Shouldn't this thread be a sticky, since it is an official contest?

And I do hope you know that you only have to write the design document right? But if you want to create your whole video game then oh well. You might even get extra credit for it. At least it encourages teamwork.

Re: Design Your Own Video Game Contest!

Here's one, just to get it started:

Divine's Bane

Genre: Action RPG (Originally action, but it would not fit the gameplay and story)

Summary: This is designed to provide an exhilarating experience, providing a new take on divine mythology. In this game, you play a divine warrior in the world of Distrasia.

Age Audience: T-13 and over

Gameplay Synopsis

As a divine warrior, you should know that you will be taken seriously. To realize your full potential, you must make the most out of your 70 magic spells and augmentations. The divine spells have their own, direct and indirect, effects. These range from holy to elemental magic. These can be chained consecutively about thirty times. Augmentations are gifts, gained by different rituals and sacrifices. They can improve your strength, efficiency at using magic spells, endurance, magic resistance, the effects of potions on you, and charisma.

The combat itself is not so fast paced, but the environment plays a huge role in it. Always pay attention to the environment for an easy way to dispatch hundreds of onscreen enemies. If you are on a cliff, knock them off; if you are in water, release electricity. Of course, you could always kill them on your own, but where's the fun in that.

The augmentations and spells become more powerful as you apply them more. The more passive ones slowly become more powerful as they settle in your system, and the more active ones require frequent use to become more powerful. They also begin to look more powerful, making you feel menacing.

Story Synopsis: TBD

Technology:

Using the future of physics and graphics technology, this game delivers stunning quality-fires spread quickly, water splashes when stepped on, houses fall when damaged severely, and pillars slowly wear away if hacked at.

Three-Point Perspective: TBD

I rushed to make this, and so I couldn't think up all of the information.
