Fresh off its recent announcement that it won't be losing its cash-printing Dragon Ball Z license after all, Atari announced today that it plans to publish a new game in the series for current-generation consoles.

Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit is in development now at Namco Bandai and is scheduled for release this year. The 3D game based on the DBZ anime universe (licensed in the U.S. by Navarre Corp.'s FUNimation division) promises "fierce online battles and radical 3D graphic effects" that will "blur the line between video game and iconic anime series."

"Atari is excited and ready to offer fans the next iteration of the Dragon Ball Z video game series on the next-gen (sic) consoles," said Donny Clay, Producer, Atari, Inc. "With explosive cinematic graphics and online gameplay, fans of the series and of the fighting genre will surely enjoy Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit."

The game is following the mechanics of the Budokai series, so you can pretty much look at it as DBZ: Budokai 4. It will also feature online multi-player so you can match your skills with other gamers. No info on the release date yet.

Finally official word on a 360 DBZ game, been waiting for an announcement for a long time. Hope this game is good, i dont want just an old recycled game with more characters again. Needs to bring something new to the table with this game. +rep

Well, it's a giant leap in the graphics department that's for sure, the facial animations are excellent compared to those in the Tenkaichi series. The gameplay looks the same as Budokai 3, but I imagine they'll fine-tune it and add more features to it.
