Feel Love in Fable
What do you think about this idea of Fable 2 trying to pull on the old heart strings?
Do you think it will affect feelings of love in you?

Re: Feel Love in Fable
Its all very interesting what Mr. Molyneux is going for, but I don't think he will be able to bridge the gap and alter our perception of reality. At least he's trying. How about this, if I feel love and shed a tear whilst playing Fable 2 I will personally tell everyone on the forums and show pictures of me crying.

Re: Feel Love in Fable
To be honest, no...
I understand that he wants the game to have an emotional impact, and that's always a good thing, but to go so far as to say I will "LOVE" the other characters... that's a little much for me...
and as I think I've said before, for me real emotional reaction for me comes from the deeper moral choices I am forced to make within a game... giving me a dog and some kids just doesn't cut it...
...I'm not saying that they wont be interesting... I may enjoy having those characters in the game... but to say I'll "LOVE" them is a couple stretches too far for me...

WELLLLLL it depends. If it were a multiplayer online game, and the person on the other side just HAPPENED to be Jennifer Aniston, then Yes.

Re: Feel Love in Fable
I like my character driven games and if the character and plot is involving (and emotional) enough I will feel a certain connection to it, I will actually care about my character. Final Fantasy VII I adored so much- when Aeris died I actually cried, yes literally cried, tears and red puffy eyes and all that- I cried twice during Advent Children as well, not quite a game but based on a game and when I watched that movie is was like becoming reaquainted with long forgotten friends, just like they were doing in the actual movie so there was something going on there that was more than just seeing characters you used to play being brought to life- there was a similar plot running alongside what i was feeling. That may sound ridiculous and make me sound like a pansy, sound insane or something but I dont care- that game was powerful and very effective and after logging so many hours playing it I couldnt help but feel an overwhelming sense of devotion and care for my characters because of the effort I put into it and the entire absorbing plot.
But, and here it comes, I didnt love the characters. I cared a lot, I was devoted to them, I didnt want anything bad to happen to them, but when it boils down it to they are just polygons and I think this is all we can ever expect to feel for a game character. What makes somebody drawn this way to characters and games, I believe, is not how realistic they look, or how human they act, look at FFVII, seriously, cubed hands, it is the depth of the storyline and how much it can engross you and drag you right in there and spark that emotion or empathy- and then make you realise it like Aeris death did in FFVII. You have to first empathise with the character, then you have to be brought into their world by an engrossing storyline, then you have to go an epic journey with them, one that is definately going to take you a while to finish. To bring somebody close to feeling real emotion for a polygon that concept is a must- and if Fable 2 doesnt have that then Molyneuxs grand plan of feeling love for your characters and your dog will never be realised.

Re: Feel Love in Fable
For me, I voted whatever - there has to be some pretty wicked story telling for me to care enough to feel anything for my characters and that is where Fable The Lost Chapters was lacking for me. There wasn't enough to make me care and the consequences were not substantial enough either.
My attitude was more like
But give me FFX and I am engrossed in the story, want to know what'll happen to Tidus and Yuna...I'm waiting for the next cutscene and who cares if it involves twenty minutes of dialogue that so far makes no sense? The characters for me were far more realistic, believable and I gave a monkey's about them more than anyone in Fable. I think the use of cinematic cutscenes played a huge role for me in getting me to care for my characters during FFX and as with a film, I felt more of a connection emotionally.
For Fable 2 to do that for me, I would need more than a Hell hound and some squalling brats to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I have no maternal instincts whatsoever, so kids for me is a total waste of time. Might make other women go all wobbly, but not me.
As for a dog, well a dog is a dog - not a patch on a human relationship. For me to really feel the love there would need to be some considerable depth to my relationship with my in-game spouse...tentative first meetings, nervous yet excited courtship and a few trials to prove our love along the way...a bit of romance, not half a bottle of manky perfume from the local trader and a wilting rose.
Having said all that, Fable 2 is not Final Fantasy - and nor do I want it to be - but feeling love will be near impossible for me unless the game has more relational depth...
But what do I know?

Re: Feel Love in Fable
welll I think im gona love the dog the most...being it looks so playful and alive. and if you think its together all ur life since you were a boy. an unknown scum like anyone else and its the only thing that cares for you most in the game.
so lets say if lucien killed my dog...I would feel this echo in my body then get ****es and sad then kill the mother fudger!

Re: Feel Love in Fable
If they can make me care about what choices i make then they will have achieved something but to say i will 'love' my character and such i doubt it. Id be more interested to see if they could play with my conscience rather than try to make me 'love' something and make me question my choices.

It would take some serious AI for me to "fall in love" with a NPC - "Chobits" AI.
So it probably won't happen.

Re: Feel Love in Fable
Well, I'm not entirely sure he's going for outright love. "Real" love doesn't have to be part of an emotional impact: Under the right circumstances I could arguably care about something horrible happening to a complete stranger.
Really, the way I view RPG's is: How would my character feel about these people? It certainly helps me in enjoying them, but your results will likely vary.

I usually love my characters anyway. Thats the great thing about RPGs, somtimes I forget the characters I take the role of arent real because they have so much depth. And since we know we get a puppy, I know I'll love it, after all Im a dog person

If they are hot such as Ashe from FFXII, then there is more of a chance of the first option.
