Games Do Cause Violent Behavior (But Not Much)

He says, “When you look at the research there’s no question at all. Violent video games do cause aggression. It’s so clear. You have to be dishonest not to see it. However, and this is a huge however, the effect is very, very small.
|
It is a stimulus that's all. People happen to have this thing some call choice. If we stop saying that x y and z cause the all the ills in life then maybe just maybe we'll actually believe that we're responsible for our actions

Re: Games Do Cause Violent Behavior (But Not Much)
any of the research I've seen has shown only a positive corelation between violent stimulus and violence, but never a causal relationship, no matter how small...
it has never been proving that those who do violence after playing violent games were not violent to begin with and simply played the violent games for that reason...

Re: Games Do Cause Violent Behavior (But Not Much)
I did not see that, and sadly I must disagree.
Games on the whole make one violent. The level of violence is variable according to the person, and on rare occasions the game.
I believe that it is only the level of competitiveness which makes people violent. For instance if someone is playing a game such as Tekken, or Dead or Alive, the enemies can get quite hard especially if you are new to the game. Losing makes people angry, and all this anger builds up as a person continues losing. This eventually leads to the violence part.
(Sorry if I insulted anyone)

The problem with this theory is that it takes for granted that watching/playing out violence makes on ... affected by it and acts it out - and that is just not true. A person needs to be "crazy" to start with to be affected in such a way that he or she acts like in the game/movie.
A normal person can see the difference between reality and fiction, and no matter how much violence a mentally sane person experiances via gaming they do not become a violent phsycopat - you need to be crazy to begin with.

Relax I am not saying all gamers are crazy. I think it's all just a big funny joke.
Anyway, you need to become obsessed first. When you're obsessed anything can upset you.

Re: Games Do Cause Violent Behavior (But Not Much)
Also games aren't the only things that have "competitiveness" that's like saying Soccer makes people violent.
People make people violent. End of my point

I am saying, if someone is obsessed with something they can get violent quite easily.

Overall, players of the violent video games produced significantly more aggressive responses than the non-violent games players.
|
That made me laugh - just exactly were those "responses"? Naturally a player who likes to chop up zombies in Dead Rising will be a more aggresive person, in the sense of general attitude and likes/dislikes, than one who enyoys nothing more than Hello Kitty's Island Adventure or Bible Stories.

..Yes something. Everything anything can make people obsessed,
people can be obsessed over people, they can be obsessed about songs, they can be obsessed about ANYTHING which puts the blame on PEOPLE fro getting obsessed, not the game or "object" of the obsession

Which brings us to my point that in order to be so affected by video game violence that you think acting it out in reality requires there to be something serious wrong with the person to start with, not the game.
Seriously, if things are so serious as Mr.Thompson claims - wouldn't the entire gaming populatin be like... a big murderous, mindless horde or something by now?

That is not the deep-seated psychotic aggression that people like Thompson speak about - that is more like extreme frustration. I get throws of frustration that I act out by slamming my fist in the wall, desk or other nearby object when doing stuff like homework - does that mean that math causes violent behaviour?
