So the people the guild's been protecting revolted against it? Maybe it has to do with Lady Grey......she wants power or something, and isn't exactly killed in the first game, so maybe upon the invention of gunpowder she incited an incident that resulted in the guilds destruction, leaving not many obstacles in her conquest for power. Of course, this is all just a theory....
if you read the albion tales it said that after the guild was destroyed the remaining hero's went underground so i think later on in the game you find them and get to recreate the guild but its kept a secret, i would have an evil guild if i got the chance

Well the hero find the guild (in ruins) in the first 3 hours of gameplay where he/she and a group of friends attempt to recreate the guild.
Heres what happened to cause the destruction after the invention of gun powder just after the hero beats dragon Jack of Blades, the people of Albion revolt against the heros with there new found wepons and kill the 'heros' and hunt them down. The villagers light the guild causing its down fall.
You mean Jack couldn't do it but a bunch of peasants could? Poor heroes...
well they never said heros went underground but that some heros went so far to hide there identity they would kill another hero even though they are a hero on the DL most heros act like regular people
