Well it would be hard to establish continuity between the original and 2 since everyone played as something different in the first one.

Perhaps they've evolved?
I just thought it would be an interesting plot device to have a little control over your enemies through more diplomatic actions rather then just violence.
Not that I don't like violence..... it's just nice to have a little variety.
