The meaning of Life.

Seems sort of a heavy-handed question huh?

Well, I am currently trying to find the motivation to write down my thoughts on the subject (not that I am anything special), but I haven't had the time, nor the effort.

What I would love to happen in this thread is to discuss what YOU think is the meaning of life, the function of a human being, or why we are here. I am deeply interested to see if my thoughts are not singular on what I perceive to be the meaning and purpose of human life.

Do you have any thoughts on it? Do you even care enough to think about it, or do you live in the here and now? I know some of you are young and some of you are older, and I also would love to know if what you thought was the meaning of life has changed since you have aged.

I am not looking for arguments, simply opinions and thoughts. Thanks ~

Re: The meaning of Life.

In my abundance of spare time I have become quite the deep thinker. I'm not the only one who has contemplated this idea before, obviously.

I don't believe there is a single meaning of life, there are too many aspects and our world is too broad to narrow it down to a single meaning. I'd have to say living as a kind, considerate, morally responsible, and intelligent human should be a goal for all. But it is impossible to bring it to a single definition.

Re: The meaning of Life.

I don't feel life has a specific objective meaning, it's all subjective really...
I guess if I had to I would say to be ones self, what ever that happens to mean, and to experience all that can be experienced as that life and from that perspective so it can be added to the whole later... or disappear... I haven't quite decided on what happens later on and I don't particularly care about that part...
I don't think that there are set ideals or or values that all are expected to embrace or achieve... a life is merely meant to live as the life they are...

Re: The meaning of Life.

The meaning of life is to end. And no, I don't mean it that emo-type-of-way but pointing at the fact one of the few facts that remain a constant factor in any life is the fact that it will end. Birth and Death.

So by this one could also say that the meaning of life is to live until you die. There is no big "great plan" laid out for us other than to just to "be".

To be honest, I think there are too many non-conformist/Goth/Emo people on this forum to get any reasonable answer. Wasn't trying to be offensive or anything.

As for the meaning of "Life":

life - Definitions from Dictionary.com

But seriously its a stupid question, life is for living and I pretty much agree with Hex - just make the most of it and enjoy yourself.

well, I do like that you agree with me , but it's not really a stupid question... he's just asking to see what our different ideas are, I for one think it's kind of interesting...

Yep. I agree with Tsuyu. You can hope and hope. but I believe there is nothing. Absolutely nothing. You exist and then you don't. But then again, Energy cannot be created or destroyed so our energy has to go somewhere, whether were "conscious" or "aware" of this is beyond me.

*sigh* Such simplemindedness these days. Just because something is dark and sinister you are far too quick to slam a emo label on it.

And what you do mean, that just because the answer is dark and sinister, "emo" according to you, it is not "reasonable"? Or that a certain kind of people give that answer it is not "reasonable"?
It is bloody reasonable - you get born and you die, it doesn't get any more reasonable than that. You can't escape neither one.

Whatever sort of answer and from whatever sort of people that give it, they are just as reasonable as anyone elses as long as they make sense. Labeling answers like that depending on what kind of people gave it to you is bloody... snooty, or whatever.

But if Birth is opposite of Death, what is the oppoite of Life? Maybe Death is just transferring into another way of "living". I believe that there will be something after you die.

Life is existing. Not existing would be the opposite. You go through "Death" and you don't exist anymore. Simple, in my eyes.

Looking at the very nature of Death, I belive, it is hardly a gateway to another way of "living" since Death is the opposite of Birth, and Birth being the gateway to "living" in the first place, which brings us back to the opposite of "Life", which is to not exist.

Just like any other machine, the human body isn't built to last forever. Although you might go trough several cars during your life, you will in the end cease to function aswell. Death.

I wasn't going to get into the discussion on risk of offending someone on accident but, I beleive in god and think there is life in heaven or hell after death...

That's your belief. No one would get offended. I know I'm not.

As long as you don't go condemning us all to Hell, like a certain other member did a while back!

That was quite an oddball.

It doesn't matter we are all going to die anyway.

Re: The meaning of Life.

I don't believe there is any real meaning to life at all, just live and die, like everything else in this universe. The only goal i see, is just living..plain and simple, people come and go, as do other living organisms, and planets, and stars. even the universe eventually. However, if there really is a goal in life that's been set for us without our knowledge, i don't think i'd want to know what it actually is.

Actually, energy can be created and destroyed, or else we ourselves wouldn't be here. Energy, matter, both are created in one form or another. Example, energy can be created once a star is born, and then all that energy can be taken away once that same star dies. Nothing really lives and or lasts forever.
