Seems that Retro Studios, creators of the highly acclaimed Nintendo title Metroid Prime have said that after Metroid 3 they will take a break from the series. Series & Retro Studios director Mark Pacini had this to say:

Be interesting to see what title comes out from their Studios in the future after dedicating to much time into the Metroid Series.
Plus my boyfriend will be playing Metroid 3 everyday when he gets home now.
