Music? Need help!

Fellow forumites.

In one of my recent school-projects I need to make some computer-generated music. if you know any free / utterly expensive programs that can be used for this, please give me a link or something!

I'm mostly going to do short snippets about 15 seconds, classic music. The project is secret but if it succeeds I might post the application here later

So uhm... you're gonna make it from scratch or just remix something?

- Im going to make it from scratch, since the application is going to analyze the sounds via an equalizer and do stuff based on that I want to have 100% control

Sonar is a good one. It's mostly mixing and stuff but you can make stuff in it, if you know how to read a stave.

mario paint is a good one it is free and easy
