Nope, that is one of the great things about Diablo II. You can both take your Single Player characters aswell as create characters for online-play onley.... free of charge!
And the PvP duels are very funny to do sometimes aswell - just don't expect much from the version where you use your Single Player characters. Those duels are just about who has the most heavily edited character/equipment.
But where your characters are for online play only it is really good at times - nobody can hack/edit here, so it is all about skill and all that.

Buffs!! they are spells that 'buff' ur char...like Physical Sheild on Fable. But what i did is i took charms ( Stones that you keep in your invetory that have buffs on em) and i hacked em a bit...or a lot....
