The latest hardware sales figures from Japan suggest that Sony’s PS3 is gaining ground on the hugely successful Nintendo Wii.

According to Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, Nintendo sold 245,653 Wiis in the four weeks to August 26th, compared with 81,541 units for Sony's PS3.

Xbox 360 sold 11,288 units in the same period.

That means that the Wii outsold Sony’s system by three-to-one in the period.

However, as noted by The Times, that ratio is half the six-to-one sales figure Enterbrain reported back in June – and down from the four-to-one rate posted in July.

If you're in a foot race, and your opponent is ahead of you, and moving away. As the opponent gets farther and farther away, do you say to yourself, "I'm gaining ground?".

The gap isn't closing, yet hardly getting smaller.

Nintendo will always be lapped up by its Japanese fans and same with Sony. Soon as the price cuts come in and some Japan friendly games come to PS3 they will lap it up too. Shame the Japanese hate none Japanese companies so much that they avoid the Xbox 360 at all costs and it makes Microsoft look bad even though the 360 has done MUCH better in Japan than the Xbox did.
