Sega has announced a while ago about Project Needlemouse:
So we are expecting a New 2D-3D Sonic game like the originals.
They have tried this with the Rush Series it was okay but it could have been better. Even though I'm a Sonic fan, I'm going to be honest and say that Sonic is dieing and at the edge of being dead, After Unleashed nobody really bothered with Sonic. Yeah another superstar game is being hyped up but the same thing happened with the tennis game.
In conclusion, Sonic should die already and like Aeris from Final Fantasy 7, no amount of fan fiction should bring it back to life.

Well Mario is still doing okay, but he would be the next to die.
This is like taking pong, making it 3D in a live action game or some random RPG. It just doesn't work like that. Some games and game characters just don't have the same appeal as they first game out.
Poor Sonic. They really have obliterated him. The original Sonic was brilliant. Sonic and Sonic & Tails 2 for the Sega MegaDrive (Sega Genesis in the US) were classics. Played them to death. Sonic 3 was great too. Then the Dreamcast took over and brought Sonic into the 3D world, that is where I think it started to go downhill. Sonic is a masterpiece that should have been left in the 90's. We can't keep dragging him back into another new game. Next-Gen consoles just cannot capture that nostalgic feeling that Sega gave us. As for Mario, he's still going strong, probably because he's a more diverse character. While Sonic can only really run fast, Mario can run, jump, punch AND kick. Although the idea of a fat Italian plumber saving a princess from a dinosaur is a little strange in today's videogame society.
