According to Ars Technica, an insider source has confirmed that Sony will drop the price of the 80 GB PS3 from $599 to $499 this holiday as expected. Additionally, the company will launch a new 40GB PS3 model for $399 complete with a Spider Man 3 movie bundle.
|
That will heat things up for the holidays.

Its still aint egnouth for sony to get back in the race. I mean a cheaper system is cool and all but without any good games whats the point of buying it?

Re: Sony to release $399 PS3 (40GB) this holiday
Why release a 40Gb model when they slated their own 60Gb model then dropped it faster than a hot coal and didnt even let that come to UK shores?

What I wanna know, is why bundle it with a stupid movie? Why not bundle it with one of their best games or something.. doesn't make any sense..

Trying to get people attracted to the Blu Ray player before xmas as thats where the sales will lie with their lack of big titles.

Re: Sony to release $399 PS3 (40GB) this holiday
for a cheap ******* such as I, cheaper is always better...
but with the only games coming to the PS3 that I want also coming to the 360, I still wont be inclined to buy one... cheap or no, there's nothing cheaper than nothing, and nothing is all I need to pay for the 360 I already own

Pfft, I don't buy consoles to watch movies on them, i buy them to play video games. It just doesn't seem like a smart move to me, I mean most people still don't have HDTV's, so they won't be able to witness the 'beauty' of Blu-Ray (as it is intended). They should switch that Blu-Ray movie with atleast a really good game..like Heavenly Sword, Virtua Fighter 5, or Resistance: Fall Of Man. But since they didn't bundle it with a game, people who are going for the 40GB version, will have to shell out another $60. Not to mention if they wanna buy an extra controller for playing with friends, that's another $20-30, plus tax...and that's damn near if not $500.

Yeah but difference is it looks a good deal on paper until you add the extras up and to Sony if it generates sales they are happy. They are just hoping that with the popularity of the Spiderman 3 movie they can shift some consoles as stand alone Blu Ray players are more expensive than the PS3. People will see it as a good deal this way and also think they are getting a bargain as not only is PS3 cheaper than Blu Ray player its a console too. Thats the way the Sony marketing team have looked at it i bet.

I'm more interested in what Microsoft and Nintedo will do if it's true.
It would be good to see the 360 come down even more but it seems more likely that they'll bundle in more stuff like maybe a free HD-DVD player

Yeah...If i'm not mistaken, they did the same with the PS2 when it came out, as it was the cheapest DVD player on the market. Which helped sky-rocket sales in Japan and other countries (killing off the Sega Dreamcast), mainly in Japan as they had never heard of "DVD" at that time, and the PS2 being the only DVD Player in Japan.

Would be interesting to see the 360 with a cheap HD DVD bundle and some quality games. Xmas bundle including any of the following and HD DVD player. Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock, or Assassins Creed. Now that would turn some heads im sure.

Yeah, in the UK & US...but what about Japan? Personally, if I was Microsoft, i would bundle the Japanese 360's with RPG Games, and other stuff. Cause with games like Dead Rising, Gears Of War, A-Creed, Mass Effect, and stuff..it's just not gonna appeal to them that well. I'd suggest they wait for a Japanese bundle when Lost Odyssey comes out, that way they can bundle the 360 with Blue Dragon & Lost Odyssey together. Now that would please alot of gamers in Japan, 2 for one deal .

Dead Rising was in top 10 in Japan for ages as it was made by Capcom and they are loyal to their Japanese companies, same as Lost Planet. Gears of War and Mass Effect might not appeal to them though i see no reason why Mass Effect shouldnt. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey would be the best choices for the Japanese bundle though and with Dead Rising going to the classics maybe that too.
