Times Writer Says Xboxes Are Toys

Columnist Kate Muir says man-teen's retreat into a fantasy world of titans and totty reflects a lack of comfort in the real world. She doesn't mean movies, books or telly shows like Primeval, she means games.

In an opinion column titled The Dark Ages, Muir writes: "At my college evening class last week, two intelligent, thirtysomething suited guys - solicitors or managers to judge from their e-mail addresses - were talking about their new Xbox 360s and what transcendent joy was to be had from them. I eavesdropped more attentively. Apparently, in Gears of War, the smallest details of the largest battles were crystal clear, in widescreen! Surely they were discussing their children's computer games? Xboxes are toys, after all."

She asks if "British chaps" really are spending their life outside work alone in their bedrooms. She assumed that we'd have put away childish things and "played amateur football, got amusingly drunk, instigated punch-ups, watched Big Brother or ineffectually pursued women". Maybe she watches too much Booze Britain on Dave (or her Mr does) and thinks that what a 'man' is?

xboxes aren't "toys". all these *******s shooting down the game industry need to **** off. theres nothing they can do about. video games are here to stay. plain and simple. no matter how hard they try, the will NEVER take down the game industry, its just too popular. that chick needs to play some CoD4

Boyfriends and husbands probably play too many games and dont shower them with much attention so they feel the need to whine about it.

I believe that if you grow up with something, like technology and that includes 360's it becomes part of you. I also believe it taught lots of things and probably kept me out of trouble. I also remember people in the 90/80's be reverd to as geeks. Now a sporsman who plays games can't be a geek can he.

I agree that we have to have a balance in life, but I am sick and $#@% tired of people who think they know it all and want to decide things for me (to get publicity) I am old enough to make my own decisions an if I'm 80 still probably sky dive , because age is but a number. You can pry my controller from my cold dead fingers.

Stop fearing the youth/technology because you don't understand it and try to contrubute to society , by actually doing something positive.

And don't genralize, because I can do it to, sinse I think you are a old man stop wearing woman's clothes since that is what sad old men do nowadays , probably

Honestly though... If they don't play video games, why do they care if other people do? That's like saying "I don't like cars, so no one else should either!".
Another thing:

And why is it always men being picked on for gaming? I clock up way more hours on video games than Steve does... maybe it's not as common, but still isn't fair to have a go at guys for having something to do which doesn't involve getting arrested at the end of the night.

Xbox 360 a toy? Would I spend almost £300 on a mere toy? Hell no. Toys are for kids - this is a sophisticated piece of gaming equipment, not some plastic tat Mattel churned out in their spare time...

Sorry to nit pick but Henry Ford didn't develop the first car. He didn't even develop the the first automobile assembly line.

He developed the first successful automobile assembly line using interchangeable parts.
