Traditional MMO Games Have Had Their Day

According to ArenaNet and Guild Wars head the days of the same old formula for MMO's should come to an end now. I would have to agree, im tired of seeing MMO games that are just clones of each other with some tweaked systems involved and bringing nothing new to the table, we need some more innovation!

Not because I think it's an awful game design, but because I think there are games out there that have polished it to the point that it's seen its ultimate expression. I hope that the development teams that are out there making MMOs don't keep trying to make any more a polished version of that same game. hope what they're doing instead is saying, 'How can we try something new? How can we bring more innovation into the industry?
NCSofts executive producer had similar things to say about it too:

Lets hope this means that newer MMO's will be trying new things and finally bring some innovation and interest back to the genre that is quickly becoming stale.

However there is one MMO title that steps away from the usual and one ive been awaiting for many years and it is here:

Thing is, I'm not sure they can go anywhere else with MMOs. I mean, what's left to do?

Plenty, just change the style of them and stop using the fantasy worlds. I mean the Matrix online looked like it was going to be an awesome MMO but they ruined it, things like that need to be perfected and created properly and step away from the stereotypical MMO image.

maybe they can start making more MMOs avalible for home consoles, like make MMOs for the 360, Ps3, and also the Wii (which would be coolest)

It's as close to fact as can be due to the recent announcement of allowing MMO game developers to require a HD for theier xbox 360 games

...And if you ARE going to use a fantasy world, why not go non-traditional with it? It's not the fact that they're fantasy, for me, it's the fact that they tend to be the *exact same fantasy*. Geez. There's other things you can do with fantasy besides "Get A Party Together And Slay A Dragon", folks.

The worst part is, I'm mostly tired of being forced to do a lot of "grinding" combat in an MMO. (Well, the exact same kind of combat, especially. I get tired of clicking on something and then waiting while I occasionally press a button) :-P

I agree, as i said the same old formula for every one with the only differences being GFX and some inventory systems between each one is getting tiresome.

I think many people will get the same idea, if WoW and other MMO's keep churning out the same content and same ideas each time with just expanded classes and weapons etc.

Re: Traditional MMO Games Have Had Their Day

Well you have to think that any MMO's core group of gamers will get tiered of the content sooner or later. Have they hit their peak yet? It's hard to say. But it's best to start now and try to figure out the next great online gaming experience. I really like the spore idea.
Perhaps the key to a good MMO is finding a way to not have to deal with things like gold farming and moronic conversations

Re: Traditional MMO Games Have Had Their Day

I'll probably get maimed for it in certain camps, but I say: Let's trying looking at the non-combat aspects, eh? It'd certainly make the world more believable if not everyone had to be some all-powerful warrior/mage in the end, via a huge amount of experience and levels. Seriously. Give me more of a choice in what roll to play in the world without HAVING to choose to be a combatant in some big capacity.
