Re: Unable to think of a sutible title...
I was a terrible student. I never believed that I could do any of the school work so I didn't. I went to summer school 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grades and graduated with a 1.69 GPA. I went on to graduate from a two year college with a 3.5 GPA and my final semester had a 4.0 with advanced Physics, Chemistry and Calculus.

Ah, school- it's the best of times and the worst of times. But mostly the worst of times. Like Angel said, school is harder now than it used to be as I can imagine. It's fricking crazy how much homework and whatnot they believe you are capable of completing! If I'm not already crazy right now (as if!), then by the end of high school I will be.

Re: Unable to think of a sutible title...
I`ve taken the road to concentrate on things I like - Chemistry, History and Estonian for example. I really like some subject and I want to learn them. But as I`m not very keen on Phisycs I simply not study it so hard and just try to do the tests. But this still wont save me from homework, which for some reason I dont really have. Or maybe I´m just too lazy to do them. Anyway, I understand your problem and I`ve been there a couple of times but I have to say that school for me isn`t too hard and my grades are all fine. But sometimes a little vioce in my head says: "Hey, why did you go there if you dont take it seriosly!" Ahhh... ...

Re: Unable to think of a sutible title...
Man, I feel for you. Year ten I said I was going to straighten everything out and the only thing so far I have even tried to work on is social studies, but thats easy. I've also got exams for the first time this year, which I'm stressing over. I'm also doing a University subject (music industry) that was offered to year elevens whilst in year ten, if that makes sense... It's crap because we have one three and a half hour lesson every wednesday for it, in which we have to complete six hours worth of work. GAH! I have two english assingments due on friday, some music industry assignment on wednesday. And on top of that all I do in maths is sleep, so I'm failing that . Good thing my parents aren't reading this...
I don't even know why we learn all this advanced maths stuff. Why do I need to know how to get the length of the hypotenuse side of a triangle by squaring the other two sides? I CAN JUST MEASURE IT!!!! It doesn't help that my teacher can't speak english properly.
And on top of all this I'm trying to get a job.
Anyway thats my rant

Re: Unable to think of a sutible title...
Advanced maths? That would never have happened for me - I was so dumb they relegated me to the back of the classroom with a box of coloured counters when I was doing GCSE's...the head of department said, and I quote, "You're too stupid for this class. Count the colours"
My teacher was nice though and took pity on me, so she gave me private tuition at lunch times for two years...managed to scrape a D in the end, when everyone said I'd get an F, so it was a real achievement for me...considering I still can't tell a 5 from a 2 and a 3 from an E. The only problem I have now is that I cannot help my daughter with her maths and so she's falling behind at school...she's only doing her ten times table but I can't keep up...

Re: Unable to think of a sutible title...
Math was my salvation academically. I was the annoying guy in class that always had his hand up. I annoyed the teacher too, so he stopped calling on me. I had to trick him into calling on me. After he wrote the problem on the board I would put my head down and wait for him to call on me then lift my head up give him the answer and put it back down again. Seeing the fact that I was getting a D or F in every other subject I think I deserved one that I did well in. Teachers didn't know what to do with me. They put me in advanced class one year and learning disabled the next. Having had an inferiority completely plus not feeling like a good grades was all that great meant that I put in zero effort. Motivation is the intersection between belief and desire and I had neither.
It wasn't until I went to college that I applied my self at all.

Re: Unable to think of a sutible title...
I think there are a lot of people who, because of teachers' lack of faith in their ability, don't bother to try at school...my school said to me "don't bother applying to sixth form - we don't want you there" and then I got a bunch of A grades and they were falling over themselves to invite me back...but I was already signed up for an awesome two years at college...
I remember being about 7 and my evil English teacher, Mrs. Mansfield, telling me my mum was a liar because I had a reading age of someone twice my age...but the school head allowed me to sit in the library and read stuff in there rather than stay in class. It was great!

My wife left school three years early and went to college And got her associates degree. She couldn't stand everyone telling her when and where she had to be.

Re: Unable to think of a sutible title...
That's the good thing about college - it is up to you to make the effort and only yourself to blame when you don't.
My sociology tutor used to start every lesson with the words, "I still get paid no matter what you guys do, so if you want **** off to the pub and **** your life away, that's your problem."
And she was right

Re: Unable to think of a sutible title...
LOL I've had teachers say the same thing to me. from the time I was teaching applications I have to say it really sucks teaching something when no one cares about the subject. If school was more contextual then I think there would be a lot more interest.
They actually brought in a graduate student from the local University to do a study on me for four months. After applying dozens of different kinds of intelligence tests. It ended with her in a meeting with the school councilor and my mom shaking her head and saying "We have no way of measuring how intelligent he is" Didn't change my grades any I can tell you that.

Re: Unable to think of a sutible title...
That sucks - it's like saying, "well he's smart as hell but we don't want to look stupid so we'll just say leave grades as they are"
My family is full of geniuses (which means no one has a normal conversation!) and it's a hard thing to live up to. They measured my dad's IQ and they estimate it to be somewhere in the 200 mark...then they meet me who can't do basic mathematical equations and wonder if I've been dropped on my head
My aunt even said to me, "Your IQ is 145? That's awfully low, don't you think?"

These are the same people that don't understand why they don't get invited to parties. No offense to your aunt
