Re: This website

Hi ctj! I thought Angel replied to this earlier while I was playing Command and Conquer 3 but I guess she forgot...

In answer to your question: I use TextPad for all my HTML and PHP coding. I used to use DreamWeaver but it just got on my nerves after a while. We're using WordPress for the main site and vBulletin to power the forums. WordPress is totally free but vBulletin is a commercial script and retails for $160 / $90.

If you ever need any help setting up your own website then feel free to give me a shout. You know where to find me!

Re: This website

You learn it as you go along, really. It's really very straight forward once you've got your first website up as you have all the time in the world to experiment. Also, just to add to my original post, here's a link to the news system we use: WordPress; and the forum software: vBulletin.

I tell 'ya, it might look terrifying at first but if you decide you want to set up your own website then I would be more than happy to lend a hand. I'm also hoping to set up another five more websites by the end of this week.

Yeah, domains costs a bit. And this forum software aint free either, and we love ol' Steve for paying for the whole shebang. But don't worry, there are ways to get some cash from websites as well, so I HOPE we don't ruin the Powell familiy's economy..

At the moment I have eight or nine websites altogether. I rent a dedicated server which costs $150 per month, however before I was paying $220 per month before I downgraded. That works out at something like $8 per day, roughly.

I can put as many websites as I like (within reason) onto my server, which is pretty cool. I will have to fork out for a second dedicated server at some point though because there's only so much one server can take before it begins to chug along at a snail's pace.

Domains are quite cheap, actually. You can buy them for around $9 nowadays which is pretty darn good. I buy in bulk, too, which means I get an extra discount on top, as well as private registration. A great place to pick up a domain name is Godaddy (link).

vBulletin forum licenses can cost a ton but fortunately DD was kind enough to go halves with me. So he definitely deserves just as much credit as me for this place being here. Fortunately I get a little bit extra off every purchase of a vBulletin license which means I'll probably only be paying around $120 for the next license.

It's true that there is a whole lot of money to be made with websites however it certainly isn't anywhere near as easy as one might hope. Roughly six months ago before my dad passed away my websites were doing absolutely fantastic and AdSense was pulling in some very attractive income on top of the job I had working for my dad. For some reason though AdSense earnings have been absolutely terrible for the past few months and I can honestly say that the line between how much profit is coming in and how much is going out to cover dedicated server costs, domain name renewals (though to be fair I only have to fork out once a year for renewals), vBulletin license renewals, PhotoPost Photo Gallery renewals and probably a few other things I've forgotten to mention. The fact that I was screwed out of my job doesn't help either.

WALL 'O TEXT.

Re: This website

Hehe, I guess they aren't that expensive... most of them. All I know of is the famous "sex.com affair". That domain is worth millions today!

Re: This website

I would totally pay a million for sex.com... if I had a million. I could probably manage about £45, though.

Re: This website

It was rather cool that actually. Not sex.com in itself, but the "internet gold rush". When the internet was young, some people (including he who originally registered sex.com) realized the worth of certain domain names and went on a "gold rush" to be the first to "stake their claim" on those nuggets o' internet gold!

Re: This website

The first domains to get snapped up are the "xxx" domains...every time a new extension such as .com, .eu, .uk etc is released, people go nuts to get hold of every possible version of "xxx" that they can. They are worth an absolute fortune in the porn industry alone...

Re: This website

It helps to understand HTML but it is not essential when making a website - get a good CMS like WordPress or Drupal and you just need to put in ordinary text as they tend to provide the code for you via buttons and help topics.

Or you can take a tutorial online via W3 Schools and practice HTML, XHTML and anything else you like until you are more confident in it all.
