Metallica are legends and i got to respect them becuase of how long they been in the business and how many people that are influenced by them. Not really a fan of newer stuff but i liked some of their older stuff, Korn are great and Linkin Park was one of my first fave bands a while ago... my taste got heavier over the years though so...

And yet again I'm agreeing with Drakan - Metallica is pure awsomeness. Their songs are older than me, but yet they beat the crap outta some of the metal/rock songs I've heard from today's modern bands.

They got some great songs (mainly their earlier stuff) i didnt like Crawling (got annoying) or In The End (was WAY overplayed) but like most of their other stuff. Oh and the japanese guy is the not the rapper for the record.

I think Crawling is dark and sinister in some way...maggots and stuff crawling under your skin. That's probably far from what the lyrics really are about, but that's what I thought the first time I heard it.

In the end....I've heard that song so many times before I actually knew about who made it. And I love the "non-rapping" part of it, it's just so meaningful and beautiful.

From the neo metal bands I like Slipknot and Godsmack the most. These two bands are great. They make new albums which are good. Linkin Park, Korn and Limp Bizkit are the most popular and their first and second albums are great, but after that its all rubbish. Look at linkin park. Regardless of the japanese hip-hopper their first album was superb. But since I saw them singing with Jay-Z(pop-star! I awso listen hip-hop. Jay-Z isnt hip-hopper!) I hate them because pop and metal is not a good mix. Korn - after issues I dont like any of their new songs.

I give a personal score to a band based on all its albums. Not 5 or 6 songs!
I dont want to be called a critic, but you must agree that the neo metal is rubbish. There are a few great bands that play neo metal and many more that have a first ablum which is good but after that their works are rubbish!
Great neo metal bands 10% - 90% the rest su***. Thats why the whole style su***!!! Sad but true.

Ivan, I never said they were the best. I just ranted out all the bands I like, and by "like" you don't have to be a fanatic fanboi/girl that wear their clothes, room full of posters and got every single album.

Everybody doesn't rate bands like you do. I've got serveral bands where I might just like one or two songs, and I would still say I "like" those bands.

Most of their songs where there's no rap is meaningful and beautiful, but I really really do like those songs, they're my favorites too. but I like Faint.

I really struggle defining the different genres now - there's so many! Most of the bands many of you seem to like I have a strong dislike for due to personal reasons - for example, I despise anything with bad language/sexually explicit lyrics/etc - so almost every band you guys have mentioned I will not listen to on principle. And, for many many reasons, Marilyn Manson and any band belonging to the black or death metal genre are definitely out in my book.

But then again, everyone has different tastes and are entitled to their opinions - maybe I'm into softer styles of rock/metal, but they are what appeal to me and I'm more into the lyrics of a song than the musical score...

However, the world is a cruel place and swear words and such have become so much part of that which is our sad everyday life that some lyrics just wouldn't have such "power" without them...alot of Manson's songs, for example.

And just out of curiosity, what is "softer" metal? Any examples?

Well, perhaps not "soft" but certainly not full of screaming and just a mish-mash of noises. Is it Norway where they have that Death/Black Metal festival? Totally weird and none of it musical - that stuff I hate largely because many of the bands involved are into Satanism and advocate it through their music and that is something I have very very strong opinions about (but this is neither the time nor the place to share them).

I do appreciate that the world is a messed up place and some people feel that they cannot articulate how they feel without profanity but I just choose not to listen to it in music. It's a weird preference that I can't explain and it's nothing to do with a sensitive nature - I'm about as sensitive as a bear with a sore head. But music is my passion and I feel it takes something away from an otherwise beautifully crafted piece when the singer starts swearing. I used to listen to music with profanity in it a lot when I was much younger and my parents were strictly "no swearing" people - part of it was probably a rebellious streak and the desire to shock and outrage their straight-laced friends. As I got older, the appeal wore off and I found it harder to appreciate a song that lapsed into profanity and didn't make full use of the language available to articulate the singer's feelings and thoughts without the need to scream obscenities.

Like I said, it's just my opinion and no one else shares it and that's fine by me. Music is something so many people feel strongly about as it has meaning and passion and people can find an affinity with certain tracks that another person may not be able to see. I appreciate that - I just choose very carefully what I listen to.

basically bands like disturbed and such, they're softer than metal bands like Old Mans Child.
