Why is there so many guests?

Well its their choice if they want to or not, obviously they would benefit from registering in many ways but its their decision.

you know you guys could be making a decent amount of money if you had a few ads down the side or somtin, not many, just like a few so that you dont notice em to much. but yeah, makin a bit of money for the site wouldnt be to bad, then you could attract even more people with competitions and stuff thatll be funded by the money you make.

We do have ads its just as a reward for registering they are invisible to you to stop them interfering with your forum browsing experience. There are ads on the main homepage though, we make enough to pay for the hosting etc from them.

they can read posts
and there's lots of reasons to be here without registering... people may be just here for info, or they may be members on other forums just here to check us out, or they may be considering joining but want to poke around and see what we're like first

Is this type of board different than EZboard in that it doesn't cost money per post? I know when I modded an EZboard back in the day, we discouraged spam to save money.

As has already been mentioned by someone else we have ads on the homepage that make money (things like "get Firefox or die" or something of that nature) but we also have ads all over the forum pages which although hidden to you guys (as you know) generate revenue from guests clicking on them. Certain ads bring in more money than others but as Tesco says - Every Little Helps.

I'd like to have Projectego.net merchandise to add to the income though...couple of crayons and some construction paper and I'm good to go

I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with EZboard - its pretty much the only bulletin board I haven't had the opportunity to try out. However, the current forum software we use is vBulletin, it's a commercial script that retails for $160 and requires an annual renewal to continue receiving updates for the product. There are no other fees beside those I just mentioned.
