and if you want the EVIL WIZARD HAT
Get all the books in the guild dorm, stay AWAY From the library (the entrance to the fresco dome), and search all the bowerstone houses.
If you want the GOOD WIZARD HAT
Just get all the books from the library first and then as many books as you want, he usually takes the good ones first.

Hope that's helpful (you need 9 books to get the hats)

Can't have both though, at least I don't think so. I think it invovles highly complicated hero saves.
