No it depends on what job you get or what unit your assigned to. There are still allot of units that havent deployed yet. And majority of training units (TRADOC) dont deploy.

Though, yeah, Rafterman, you may have missed the point. I doubt, somewhat, that the Aussies have either the same terminology or the same forces deployed as we do. Sure, they're in Afghanistan and Iraq with us, but not in the same numbers.

I have to go to what they call a YOU (Your Opportunities Unlimited) session, where they do kind of like a careers test from high school, but for the army. They ask you a few questions, get you to do a few tests, and from that they decide what job you would be best suited to pursuing should you get into the army.

If this is successful, I would like to train to become a commando next year. They're like our special forces.

I already said that I don't mind being deployed (at least not right now). I enjoy the whole romantic idea of dying for your country.

Besides Australians only have casualties in the single digits (or close to) from our full time army. The Reserve hardly ever get's deployed into warzones, and they are usually deployed to disaster relief and whathaveyou, if at all.

I just thought it was so radically unlike me, and I was actually surprised that I did it.

Nor in the same roles. We're mostly peacekeeping, law enforcement etc. Not out fighting the Taliban or anything.

I dunno. I have no actual knowledge, but I get really suspicious when I start hearing what sounds like recruiters going, "oh, we don't go into combat." and such. But yeah, I see. Though I'm not sure what you mean by "peacekeeping." Seems like a kinda weaselly, ambiguous phrase.

Not all soldiers get killed by IEDs, about 90% of them do, but some actually get shot. Shows that al Qeada has neither the balls or glory to fight like men, they hide in caves calling a cell phone attached to a small explosive device that has bones and metal and **** all over it, so that it will send shrapnel flying into soldiers. Who the **** does that? Uncivilized mother ****ers should all die along with the civilians.

Mostly like patrolling sorta stuff is what I'm getting at. We still haven't got many casualties. I think it's like 11 out of however many years we've been there. I'm just saying I don't think we're on the front line.

True, I do agree with that. But if it turns out I die, I don't have any regrets.

What does scare me is losing my limps via landmine. I've grown quite attached to them.

Yeah, I think it's great. I really dig the idea of becoming a music student by day, elite soldier by night.

Also, I heard a story about the Commandos. They have this fridge at their base which is full of cans of delicious Coca Cola. They don't drink it though - it's just there for temptation.

Well, no. Guerilla warfare is the favorite warfare of people too weak to fight the other kind of war, just like it always has been. It's not pretty. It's not pleasant. And it usually ****s over innocent bystanders, one way or another, almost or at least as bad as whoever's being fought against.

But it has one advantage: it can allow a group with worse equipment, fewer people, and/or less support to be a serious pain in the ass to whoever they currently consider their enemies. Sometimes even to the point of getting rid of said enemies, sometimes just to the point of being a royal pain in the ass.
