Though is is speculation, from a business point of view seems like a smart thing. I think there might just be 2 - 3 years still left in the ps3 Xbox 360 , and less in the Wii . More games going multi platform with some staying loyal to brand. For Micro$oft I will put my life on it though that it will fail in Japan again even if they call it the X-Box 720 EX+Alpha

They have said that the PS3 is meant to have a 10 year life cycle, id imagine theres 2 years left in the 360 still yet as you said. Microsoft will never succeed in Japan, they did better with the 360 an the original Xbox but they will never take over in Japan as the dominant brand.
