Microsoft talks up the effect price drop will have on Christmas market

Microsoft has shrugged off any fear that its Core Xbox 360 will struggle for prominence in the Christmas market – and told MCV that its price drop will tempt customers away from PS3.

The Core console’s price point falls to just £179.99 today – the same as Nintendo’s Wii – whilst the 20GB Premium model is reduced by £30 to £249.99.

And Microsoft’s UK marketing manager for the Xbox 360, Dan Cornelius, believes that the dip in price will steal the attention of new entrants to the market away from PS3 this Christmas.

“If you look at PS3, it’s a lot of money for families to come in at,” he told MCV.

“Sony is requiring a fairly novice gamer to enter into things like Blu-Ray and wireless gaming by default. The Core’s still doing well for us in the UK and the price drop is bound to produce a spike in sales.

These customers like the fact that they don’t have to foot the bill for a load of technology they don’t need. It means we can gain access to a type of consumer that PS3 cannot.”

The firm also rolls out the 120GB Xbox Elite at retail today, with an SRP of £299.99. “With the launch of Elite and the price drop, the delta in terms of value for money between 360 and PS3 gets broader,” added Cornelius. “We feel we’re in a stronger position than our competitors in the run up to Christmas.”

Its actually quite true, the 360 is cheaper and will appeal to more parents to get their kids one at xmas. Obviously the Wii will probably be best seller with its novelty fun and family side to it but 360 will be the cheap alternative for serious gamers and it will easily have best games.

Yeah, even though I like the PS3 (But not Sony), It's still too expensive for me to even go near it this holiday season. All of it's extra gadgets are nice and all, but they're utterly useless for me (as a gamer). Hell, I'm even starting to consider purchasing myself a Nintendo Wii soon, it looks pretty damn good to be honest . PS3 just doesn't offer enough variety of good games, plus it's price is a slap in the face.

From the looks of it, this War is more so between just Microsoft & Nintendo now.

Yeah i wont be getting a PS3 anytime soon either. They dont have enough games that appeal to me right now to justify me getting one and they are really expensive. With all the great titles coming to 360 in next few months it makes you look at PS3 and wonder just what they have to offer this holiday season.

I would never get my kid a PS3 over a 360. No way, it is just too much money. Hells, even a 360 might be a bit too much. But if nagging was abound, getting a 360 would be the lesser of two evils, so to speak.

And if said kid would have even a tiny brain cell of info on the gaming industry of today, he'd want the 360 anyway.

Thats why the Wii will be so popular, all adults talk about it as most have used one when drunk. They will secretly want to use it while kid is at school and its cheap. Microsoft made a great move getting the 360's price to that of the Wii as if it wants to compete it needs that appeal to it.
